Originally part of the Doheny Ranch, Trousdale Estates is a treasure trove of architectural bliss stashed away in the hills north of Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills. In 1954, Paul Trousdale purchased 429 acres and began carefully carving out the 532 lots in the hillside that would later become Trousdale Estates.
Paul Williams, Wallace Neff, A. Quincy Jones, and Frank Lloyd Wright were among many of the A-list architects to design the early residences and establish the neighborhood’s reputation as a chic, mid-century modern enclave including Hollywood Regency and California Ranch.
Touting a “life above it all” to the upper echelon, Trousdale Estates quickly became one of the city’s hottest neighborhoods among the likes of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elton John, and even former President Richard Nixon. Today, the neighborhood’s star power continues with celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Vera Wang, Jane Fonda, Ryan Seacrest, and Ellen DeGeneres calling Trousdale home in recent years.
The late 70’s marked what felt like the beginning of the end of California Modernism in Trousdale when the first home was razed and replaced with an ephemeral contemporary design covered in stucco. Several homes met the same fate until the early 2000’s when young Hollywood began to take notice of their architectural significance and began buying and renovating the properties, creating architectural trophy homes.
Below is a lengthy list of residences, represented by Hilton & Hyland, that have since been masterfully reinterpreted, maintaining a careful balance of mid-century design with modern materials and the finest amenities.
